15 Best Tourist Destinations Outside Delhi for Day Trips & Short Getaways

Published on : September 7, 2026

Delhi is the introduction, not the story. Beyond the boundaries of Mughal architecture and modern cosmopolitanism, is the bigger story, made of many parts that actually stay with you. Titled as the marble hush of a mausoleum at dawn, a tiger’s pugmark pressed fresh into red earth, a mountain town so quiet you can hear yourself think for the first time in weeks, and many more.

While most India journeys begin in Delhi, they rarely should end there. So, we have shortlisted fifteen of the best tourist destinations outside of Delhi, some enough for short getaways on a lazy Sunday, and others deserve a weekend. Our team at Bespoke India Holidays has driven to, stayed at, and experienced all the places on this list and would be happy to take you to any of them tomorrow.

Day Trips Within Easy Reach (Under 3–4 Hours)

These are the destinations to visit near Delhi that comfortably fit into a single day, door to door, with time to actually enjoy them rather than tick them off.

1. Agra: Where a Tomb Became the World’s Most Famous Love Story

Tourist destinations outside Delhi are incomplete without Agra, and for good reason. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is best seen at sunrise. It’s an unbeatable view when the marble changes its appearance from soft pink to clear white.

Also don’t miss the Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh for an unobstructed view of the monument’s quieter back face, especially at dusk with almost nobody else around.

The full route, plus where to stay, lives in our India Golden Triangle itinerary.

Travel Details: Distance: 233 km, about 3.5–4.5 hours by road via the Yamuna Expressway.

2. Neemrana, Rajasthan: Fort-Palace Built Into the Aravalli Hills

Neemrana Fort-Palace dates to the 15th century and is one of India’s oldest heritage hotels, terraced across fourteen levels on sheer cliffside in the ancient Aravalli hillside. Guests can explore hidden royal courtyards, enjoy open-air amphitheatre performances, or glide over the country’s highest private zip-line strung across the valley.

Travel Details: Distance: 122 km, about 2-2.5 hours via NH48

3. Mathura & Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh: Land of Krishna

Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, Mathura and Vrindavan are twin towns where Lord Krishna’s story is said to have played out. Temples like Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir are devotional and sitting next to the riverside ghats feels far more intimate than you’d expect.

Just two places to travel near Delhi that are unhurried and deeply lived-in. Go early in the morning for temple rituals before the midday heat sets in.

Travel Details: Distance: 160 km, approximately 2 hours of drive via the Yamuna Expressway

4. Bharatpur (Keoladeo National Park), Rajasthan: An Extraordinary Bird Sanctuary

Once a royal duck-hunting reserve, Keoladeo National Park became a national park in 1982 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its exceptional avian biodiversity. Over 370 bird species have been recorded here, including the rare Siberian crane, making it one of the beautiful getaways around Delhi.

Explore it the traditional way by cycle-rickshaws and on foot. It’s quieter, slower, and exactly how the wetlands should be seen.

Travel Details: Distance: 220 km, roughly 3.5-4 hours by road | Details on timings and access are maintained by Rajasthan Tourism

5. Alwar & Sariska, Rajasthan: Fort in the Morning, Tiger Reserve by Afternoon

Alwar’s Bala Quila fort, Siliserh Lake, and City Palace are reason enough to visit Rajasthan. But most travelers come for what’s just outside the town: Sariska Tiger Reserve. Get your private wildlife safaris set against the Aravalli hills.

Travel Details: Distance: 160-200 km depending on route that takes about 3 hours from Delhi

6. Kurukshetra, Haryana: History You Can Stand Inside

If you’re drawn to India’s living history and scripture, you should know about Kurukshetra, where the Bhagavad Gita was spoken. The Brahma Sarovar tank and Jyotisar are traditionally regarded as the site where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. It is a quieter, more contemplative place to travel near Delhi. Fewer crowds, more meaning.

Travel Details: Distance: 160 km, around 2.5 hours

7. Sohna & Damdama Lake, Haryana: The Nearest Exhale

If you want to travel around Delhi NCR, the closest of all the places we suggest is Sohna’s natural hot springs and the still waters of Damdama. Also enjoy a lakeside lunch & spa after a short Aravalli hike.

Travel Details: 55-60 km, which you can cover in barely an hour

Short Getaways for a Weekend or Long Weekend

With a night or two to spare, these tourist destinations near Delhi reward the extra travel time with hill air, heritage stays, and a genuine change of pace.

8. Jaipur, Rajasthan: City Painted Pink

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a planned city. In 1876, the entire city was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, a colour it has kept ever since. Amber Fort’s mirrored halls, the City Palace, and the latticed windows of the Hawa Mahal – none of it photographs as well as it feels to walk through. Stay at the legendary Taj Rambagh Palace, formerly the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, where peacocks roam on manicured lawns and admire the city that has never toned itself down.

Jaipur’s historic bazaars, like Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, also offer world-class gemstone shopping and luxury handcrafted textiles.

Travel Details: 280 km, around 4 hours’ drive or 45-minute flight

9. Mandawa & the Shekhawati Region, Rajasthan: India’s Open-Air Art Gallery

Most first-time visitors have never heard of this tourist destination outside Delhi, and those who have been to can’t stop recommending it. Merchant families in the 18th and 19th centuries competed to commission the most beautiful frescoes on their haveli walls. As a result , havelis across the Shekhawati region are painted from floor to roofline.

Sleep in a converted haveli in Mandawa and do not miss the camera, since this place is absolutely photogenic for real.

Travel Details: approximately 190 km, roughly 4-4.5 hours

10. Rishikesh & Haridwar, Uttarakhand: Spiritual Peace and Himalayan Wellness

Set in the Himalayan foothills, surrounded by forested hills where the Ganges leaves the mountains, Rishikesh is nothing but a retreat for mind and body. Rightfully the yoga capital of the world and the best-known center for riverside meditation and Ayurveda, this small town is enough to calm every kind of chaos inside you.

Learn more about Rishikesh’s religious and adventurous side in more depth, if you decide to extend your stay there for a few more days. Usually people do, and we understand why.

30 minutes down the road, you’ll reach Haridwar, one of Hinduism’s seven holiest cities. With hundreds of oil lamps set adrift on the Ganges during the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, it is a divine experience.

Travel Details: about 240 km, 4.5-5 hours’ drive from Delhi

11. Mussoorie & Landour, Uttarakhand: The Queen of the Hills

High in the Garhwal Himalayas is Mussoorie, the colonial-era hill station above the Doon Valley. With pine-scented air and mountain views away from haze, it’s one of the most popular short getaways around Delhi for travelers craving cooler temperatures, especially outside the winter months.

Right next to it is Landour. If you’ve read Ruskin Bond, you already know the place is popular for cozy cafes; warm, rich coffee, and lanes that smell like cupcakes and fresh-baked bread.

Travel Details: 290 km, about 5-5.5 hours via road or a 45-minute flight to Dehradun

12. Lansdowne, Uttarakhand: Cantonment Town Time Forgot, on Purpose

Lansdowne remains a former British cantonment of the Garhwal Rifles, which is deliberately kept free of heavy commercial development. Wrapped in oak and pine forest with views toward the snow-capped Himalayas on a clear day, it is one of the quietest hill stations you’ll ever visit.

Travel Details: about 270 km via Kotdwar, roughly 6.5–7.5 hours.

13. Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: Colonial Finery in the Mountains

If Delhi’s heat and noise have simply worn you down, this is one more tourist destination outside the city that you must not miss. Once the summer capital of British India, Shimla charms with its neo-Gothic architecture and historic Viceregal Lodge.

Enjoy the beauty of snow-capped Himalayan peaks travelling aboard the historic Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage railway.

Travel Details: approximately 340 km, 7 hours’ drive or direct regional flight

14. Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand: India’s First, and Still One of Its Best

Would you rather track a tiger than a shopping bag? Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed for hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, this was where tiger conservation actually began in 1973 as Project Tiger. Set along the Ramganga River in the Himalayan foothills, it’s one of the most reliable places in India to see a wild Bengal tiger, along with elephants and more than 600 recorded bird species.

Travel Details: about 260 km, roughly 6-7 hours

15. Chandigarh: City Built Like a Piece of Art

Chandigarh, India’s first fully planned post-independence city, was designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. Its Capitol Complex (the Legislative Assembly, Secretariat, and High Court) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 as part of a seventeen-site listing across seven countries.

Also visit the Sukhna Lake and the Rock Garden for a weekend built around great design. Further details via Incredible India.

Travel Details:  250 km, roughly 5–5.5 hours from Delhi
