Best Places to Visit in Amritsar - Golden Temple

One of the best places to visit in Amritsar is The Golden Temple

Everyone visiting Golden Temple, has to make sure the head and arms are covered as per the temple rules. To cover your head, one can buy a scarf easily available outside the temple from a street vendor. Also, don’t forget to keep your shoes at the shoe stall and collect your token so that it’s easy to collect your shoes when you get back.

Feel the cool marble beneath your feet as you walk towards the main temple. Wash your hands and feet. You can also see people taking a dip into the lake before they go inside the temple. Enjoy the music and the Kirtan (devotional songs) that are sung by the devotees at the temple almost the entire day, making you feel the spirituality and calmness around. Within the temple is the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs.

One must-see and enjoy Langhar (Communal Meal) at the community kitchen at the Golden Temple, where volunteers feed 30,000 people free daily.  The meal has flat Indian bread (Roti), Daal (Lentils), Kheer (sweet), and Chole (Chick Peas) and altogether makes this a Langhar. One can also volunteer in making Roti and serving the same to all the devotes. While at Golden Temple, feel the positive energy and understand Sikhism up close.

The next on the list of the best places to visit in Amritsar is Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar, but this place also houses the most important memorial of Indian History. Established in 1951 by the Government of India to commemorate the massacre of peaceful celebrators including unarmed women and children by British occupying forces, on the occasion of the Baisakhi (Punjabi New Year) on April 13, 1919, in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. During your visit to the garden, you will see lots of little alleys that provide access to the park, which were sealed by Britishers back then because of which people gathered for the celebration were kind of jammed and were killed on the order of General Dyer. One can also see the well, where people tried to jump in to save themselves.  There is a wall in the garden that still has the clear bullet marks. The time you will spend at Jallianwala Bagh will surely make you revisit the history.

The Jallianwala Bagh

Experience the zeal at Attari-Wagha border where the lowering of the flag ceremony is undertaken by the soldiers of India and Pakistan and the crowd showing equal enthusiasm and patriotism towards the country. The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both sides and ends with a perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations’ flags. It is called the Beating Retreat border ceremony. Join the crowd to display the same energy and love for the country INDIA.

To explore the true essence of traditional Punjabi culture and lifestyle, you can take a walk in the nearby village in Amritsar. One can experience the tranquillity of the countryside and farm life and walk along the sprawling acres of carefully nurtured crops. Get into Punjabi attire by wearing turban and take some amazing pictures with locals and add in your Amritsar photo album.
