Derived from name Amrit-Sarovar, which means the pool of nectar of immortality. The city has Sikhism's holiest shrine Harmandir Sahib or the Golden temple. The golden temple is must see for its soulful, serene and beautiful ambience. The other must-see experience would be a trip to Wagah border (Indo-Pak border) which is a one hour journey from amritsar. The 30 minutes 'Beating the retreat' ceremony which takes place every evening involves change of guards on both sides and is a sight to watch.
